The Historical Bit
By the 1960s the Wilmington Line was in decline. Scheduled freight services were often cancelled due to insufficient loads and passenger services sometimes consisted of a passenger car attached to a freight service.
When the Port Pirie-Broken Hill Line was converted to standard gauge in 1969-70 the Wilmington Line became isolated from the rest of the narrow gauge network. This resulted in the cancellation of all passenger services.
The line had no signals beyond Gladstone Yard and only Booleroo Centre was manned by railway staff. Train order working was in operation on the line.
The 1980s working timetable for the Wilmington Line consisted of a single return freight service each week. The line was closed in 1990 and the track has since been removed. A section of the line has been converted to a "rail trail".
