A scenario in the SAR Peterborough Base Session v2.0
A selection of express, local and mixed (passenger and freight) passenger services from Peterborough to Quorn. Bottom

 The Historical Bit

From 1917 until 1932 an express passenger service, the East-West Express, ran from Terowie to Port Augusta via Peterborough and Quorn. In 1932 it was replaced by a rail car service which ran until 1938. That service was replaced by a passenger car attached to a freight service. The rail car service was restored in 1957 using a Brill rail motor. It ran a return service three days a week until 1969 when all passenger services on the line were withdrawn.

During the 1960s the track speed limit on the line had been reduced to 30 or 35 mph but the rail motor service was given a special exemption to run at speeds up to 47 mph (its maximum possible running speed).

A summary of the facilities and product loads at all locations along the line is provided in the link Port Peterborough-Quorn Line

  • The Rail Motor has authority to exceed the posted speed limits up to a speed of 45 mph except in yards and on certain bridges where separate speed signs using a yellow background are placed.
  • If the Rail Motor set is unavailable then it can be substituted with the passenger cars and guard van stored in the Depot  Car Shed  and a suitable available loco from the depot. Normal line speed restrictions will then apply.
  • The approaches to all locations are protected by invisible signals to prevent the AI Half Speed Slowdown Problem when approaching a signal at stop.
  • The curves between Wallaway and Eurelia and some bridges have posted 20 mph (30 mph for the Rail Motor) speed restrictions.
  • Trackmarks and industries have been provided for AI Drive To Trackmark, Drive via Trackmark and Drive to  Industry  commands. Click Location Index for details.
  • Manual (no AI) driving is possible. As a visual driving aid, a Caution warning sign has been placed at the location of the Main Approach Dn and Main Approach Up trackmarks. Click Location Index for details.
  • If driving manually in yards, you are responsible for correctly setting any catch points.
