Major manned station and junction on the  Port Augusta-Hawker Line  and the  Peterborough-Quorn Line  and until 1932 a vital part of the Transcontinental Railway from Sydney to Perth. From 1926 to 1973 Quorn was staffed by the Commonwealth Railways. From 1973 to March 1978 it was staffed by the SAR.

Multiple Loops and sidings for station, goods, grain and fuel depot plus loco servicing facilities.

Quorn was originally the junction between the  Central Australia Line  (Port Augusta to Alice Springs) which was operated by the Commonwealth Railways (CR) and the  Peterborough-Quorn Line  which was operated by the SAR. It was a major service and supply centre.

In 1950 the Central Australia Line was diverted away from Quorn and in 1956 the old Central Australia Line from Port Augusta was closed except for the section between Quorn and Hawker where the CR continued to operate a single weekly freight service. As a result traffic through Quorn declined significantly.

After the closure of the Quorn-Hawker Line in 1972, Quorn became the operations centre for the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society, a narrow gauge steam preservation railway.

The Peterborough-Quorn Line closed in 1987. The Pichi Richi Railway is still in operation on the restored narrow gauge line between Quorn and Port Augusta.
