Ks Class History
Southern's Ks Class 2-8-0's were the main 2-8-0's used on the line. There are several different variants in the K class family. Each design derived from the previous. It can be hard to tell members of the family apart because the numbers aren't grouped to each individual class (as in Ks 573-640 or Ks-1 630-722). The classes are scattered between (for the most part) numbers 550~890.
K - The base design of the series. They did not have superheaters and other modern appliances. Example
Ks - The most numerous of the class. Most noticable by their odd shaped cylinders. Example
Ks-1 - The most generic looking. These were the first with piston valves. Two famous excursion engines came from this group, 630 & 722. Example
Ks-2 - To me these are virtually identical to the Ks-1's.
Ks-3 - These are the largest Southern Railway consolidations. They are numbered in the 2500's. Very easily distinguished by their size. Example
