This How-to guide details how to create a well-formed High Voltage Power Line spline for use as scenery in Surveyor. The power line is comprised of a parent KIND Track asset which represents the large pylons, and a child KIND Track asset which provides wires running between the pylons. This child asset is only useful in the context of its parent and is not separately placeable in Surveyor.

Pylon Spline

TBD. Notes:

  • This asset includes LOD levels to allow a highly detailed main mesh which quickly degrades to a low-detail but similar looking variant.
  • "dont-scale-mesh-to-fit-length" is enabled, to ensure that the relatively small pylon mesh is not stretched to fit the repeat length (239m.)
  • "horizontal-shear" transformation is used to ensure that the pylon meets up with the wires without becoming distorted or leaning away from the ground gradient.
  • "follows-ground-height-at-ends-of-mesh" is enabled to ensure that height variations across the length of the spline don't affect the mesh, even if no gradient is applied.
  • An "endcap-next" mesh is specified to ensure that there is always a pylon at the end of the spline. The pylon is positioned at the start of the repeat, so there will always be a pylon at the start of the spline.

Wires Spline

TBD. Notes:

  • This asset includes LOD levels to allow a moderately detailed main mesh which quickly degrades to a low-detail but similar looking variant.
  • "permit-listing" is disabled to prevent this asset showing up in the Surveyor lists.
  • An identical "mesh-length" is used to the parent asset, to ensure that the wires curve neatly from pylon to pylon rather than following a separate path.
  • "follows-ground-height-at-ends-of-mesh" is used to ensure that height variations between pylons do not affect the wires (since the wires are effectively hanging from the pylons, it would look odd if they adjusted based on the underlying ground, but they still need to adjust based on the ground under the pylons.)
  • "shear" transformation is used to ensure that the wires meet up with the pylons and with the next repeat of wires.
