In the Trainz Plus Q1 2019 update, we have introduced a Beta release of Controller Support for Trainz.

These control settings have been tested with an Xbox One controller connected via cable to a PC and via a wireless connection. Other controllers have not been tested.

We will also be improving controller support in a number of areas over time.

[edit] How to enable

Open the Trainz launcher and click “Trainz Settings”. In the “General” tab, check the bottom option “Enable game controller support”. Close all windows and restart Trainz

[edit] Basic Controls in DCC Mode

[edit] Chase

Chose means you are focused on the consist.

  • Right stick up/down: move up and down the consist
  • Right Trigger: Increase speed control dial
  • Left Trigger: decrease speed control dial
  • Left Shoulder Button: Switch between free roam and focused on consist
  • Dpad left and right: change next switch

[edit] Free roam camera

  • Right Stick: move around the map
  • Left Stick: rotate around the camera
  • Right Trigger: Increase speed control dial
  • Left Trigger: decrease speed control dial
  • DPad up and down: zoom in and out
  • Dpad left and right: change closest switch to the compass

[edit] Car Camera

  • The Right Thumbstick pitches and yaws the camera. Pushing left "turns left", rotating counterclockwise. Pushing up "pitches up".
  • The D-Pad "Up" and "Down" buttons control camera Zoom. Pushing "Up" zooms in. Zoom motion continues smoothly while the button is held.
  • The Left Shoulder button causes the camera to detach from the target, transitioning to Roaming Camera mode.

  • The Left Thumbstick moves the camera without rotating it. Pushing left "strafes left". Pushing up "walks forward".
  • Clicking the Left Thumbstick toggles "run" mode (via the Camera Movement Speed Modifier keybind). This causes compass movement due to the Left Thumbstick to be substantially faster.
  • The Right Thumbstick rotates the camera without moving it. Pushing left "looks left" (rotating the camera counterclockwise). Pushing up "looks up" (pitching the camera upward).
  • The D-Pad "Down" button can be held to exit to Roaming Camera mode, whereupon it is immediately interpreted as "Zoom Out" (ie. the user does not need to release and re-press the button to zoom out).
  • The Left Shoulder button causes the camera to attach to the nearest valid target, within a very limited radius. This switches to External Camera mode if a valid target is selected.

  • The Left Thumbstick moves the camera without rotating it. Movement takes camera yaw into account, but not camera pitch, so level flight is maintained.
  • Clicking the Left Thumbstick toggles "boost" mode (via the Camera Movement Speed Modifier keybind). This causes camera movement due to the Left Thumbstick to be substantially faster.
  • The Right Thumbstick pitches and yaws the camera. Pushing left "turns left", rotating counterclockwise. Pushing up "pitches up".
  • The D-Pad "Up" and "Down" buttons caused the Drone height to be adjusted upward and downward, respectively. No camera transitions result from this; the camera is simply clamped to an acceptable height range.

Note that the D-Pad is a contextual control that will have different effects dependant on what you are doing. Such as when in coupling mode or changing the next junction while driving.

[edit] Basic Controls in Surveyor

  • Left Thumbstick moves the compass. All movement occurs relative to the camera orientation, meaning that the left and right movements describe an arc (counterclockwise, and clockwise, respectively), and the up movement pushes the compass away from the camera. (As always, the camera follows the compass movements over time.) Greater deflection of the thumbstick results in faster movement.
  • Clicking the Left Thumbstick toggles "run" mode causings compass movement to be substantially faster.
  • The Right Thumbstick rotates the camera around the compass. Pushing left "looks left" (rotating the camera counterclockwise). Pushing up "looks up" (lowering the camera height). Greater deflection of the thumbstick results in faster rotation.
  • The D-Pad "Up" and "Down" buttons control camera Zoom. Pushing "Up" zooms in. Zoom motion continues smoothly while the button is held. If the user zooms all the way in, and keeps holding the "zoom in" control, the camera transitions to Walk mode. If the user zooms out all the way, this transitions to Map Camera as normal.
  • The Left Shoulder button causes the camera to attach to the nearest valid target, within a very limited radius. This switches to External Camera mode if a valid target is selected, or to Car Camera is the target is actually a Carz object.

[edit] Remapping Controls

You can remap the controls by entering the settings while in driver and selecting control settings. You can also view any mapped controller buttons in here. You may need to go in and map some buttons yourself to setup the way you want it (on the Xbox controller the 4 main buttons are not mapped by default).
