Engine sounds
TRS has multiple ways of handeling engine sounds. The main three ones can be easly edited by the user via the asset's config.txt file.
- The first one simulates diesel engine sound by playing different sound files depending on the throttle position you are at. These files include a looping sound a "ramping up" sound and a "slowing down" sound. The looping sound is the one that will keep playing if you stick to the same throttle position. If you then decide to give some more power then the ramping up sound will play (to be able to reach the next level) and the looping sound for that level will play until you go to another throttle level/position. The naming conventions are as follows:
- idle #.wav is for the looping sounds, the number represent the throttle position
- down #-#.wav is for the "slowing down" sounds, the first number represent the throttle position its coming from and the second is the number its going at. (always one notch lower, cant skip notches)
- up #-#.wav same for the one above, but for "ramping up" sound.
- The second method, recently introduced in TC2 time shifts a sound file. The shifting is tied to the train's speed. So increasing the speed the sound file plays as the speed of the train increases is a way to simulate the sound of modern electric trains today. Instead of using multiple sound files, trains only needs a single one and does the rest. The user is offered some flexibility via config.txt entries where you can set how much timeshifting is done and if you want the sound to fade as you reach zero speeds. As you reach full speed the file will play at the factor you define in the config.txt entry +1. Linear time compression is made from zero to full.
